My distant cousin, Richard Carlile ~ publisher of Thomas Paine, correspondent of Thomas Jefferson ~ hailed as England's ‘Father of Freedom of the Press’ ~ spent many years in prison for his independent journalism, and his refusal to publish the government's lies.

The quote that opens my post, was originally spoken by Richard at a public protest rally ~ though I much prefer the final version he put to print: “The most virtuous patriotism is a resistance to bad Laws.”
